Celebrating 5 years of Ironman participation

Adjustments, Not Changes

Whether you’re racing for the first time or you’ve raced countless Ironmans, you surely know better than to try something new on race day.  New sneakers could lead to blisters.  A change in nutrition could have you cramping.  Race like you train.

So, here I am just days before my third Ironman with different wheels on my bike and a new compact crank set.  What am I doing?  Well, let’s think of it as adjustments, not changes.  My Easton EA 90 TT wheels have been nothing but trouble – 4 broken spokes in 10 months.  The last one being this past Saturday during my last training ride in the Bay Area.  I rented some Zipp wheels for peace of mind!

As for the compact crank set, it’s pretty much murder to your legs to climb West Coast hills with standard gears.  The compact gives me more room to spin my legs as I climb.  And, since I was headed to Pac Bikes anyway to get the wheels taken care of, I figured why not!

Many thanks  to M2 and Pac Bikes for helping me get these adjustments ready just in time for IM Canada!
